Why do so many people reach their goals—and still feel empty?
Why Everything Feels Empty: What Ecclesiastes says about life!
Many people today are asking big questions:
- What is the meaning of life?
- Why do I feel empty inside?
- Why doesn’t success make me happy?
- What is my purpose in life?
Even people who achieve their goals—money, success, influence, or fame—often discover something surprising:
It still doesn’t satisfy.
This struggle isn’t new.
Thousands of years ago, the Bible addressed this exact question in the book of Ecclesiastes. King Solomon, one of the wisest and wealthiest people who ever lived, searched for meaning in everything life could offer.
His conclusion was startling:
“Vanity of vanities… all is vanity.”
— Ecclesiastes 1:2
The word vanity means vapor—something that appears for a moment and then disappears.
Solomon discovered that life lived only for what exists “under the sun” will always feel empty.
But Ecclesiastes doesn’t leave us hopeless.
It shows us where real purpose and lasting meaning can actually be found.
Solomon’s message is simple:
Life focused only on earthly things will never truly satisfy.
Life “Under the Sun”
Ecclesiastes repeatedly uses the phrase “under the sun.”
It describes life lived only from an earthly perspective—without God at the center.
When life is only about what we can achieve, earn, or experience, everything eventually feels empty.
Solomon tested it all:
- Pleasure
- Success
- Fame
- Money
- Wisdom
His conclusion? - Read Chapter 2:10
None of it could give lasting meaning.
Our culture constantly pushes the idea that happiness comes from achievement.
But Ecclesiastes warns us:
- Money won’t satisfy you.
- Fame won’t fulfill you.
- Pleasure won’t last.
Even Jesus asked the most important question:
“What shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
— Mark 8:36
You can have everything the world offers and still lose what matters most.

What Actually Lasts
Ecclesiastes doesn’t leave us hopeless.
Instead, it points us toward a better perspective: life beyond the sun.
Real purpose is found when life is centered on God.
Things that truly matter include:
- Helping others know Christ
- Serving God with your gifts
- Growing in Scripture
- Doing good that impacts eternity
Everything done for God has lasting value.
Don’t Waste Your Life
Life moves quickly.
The real question isn’t whether life has meaning—it’s where you’re looking for it.
If you only search under the sun, everything eventually fades.
But when you look to the Son—Jesus Christ—you discover a purpose that lasts forever.
