#Is This All There Is?

An Ancient Answer to Modern Questions

A reflection from Ecclesiastes on success, work, meaning, and why so many people still feel empty—even when life looks full.

As a new year begins, many people find themselves asking questions they don’t always say out loud:

What really matters?

Why am I working so hard?

Is there more to life than this?

Those questions are not new. In fact, they are at the heart of one of the most honest and surprising books in the Bible Ecclesiastes.

##Searching for What Matters

This week we’re beginning a new series called Searching for What Matters, and Ecclesiastes may be one of the most relevant books of Scripture for our modern culture.

Written by Solomon, a king who experienced wealth, pleasure, power, wisdom, and success at the highest level—Ecclesiastes offers a sobering evaluation of life when it is lived strictly from an earthly point of view.

##Life “Under the Sun”

Solomon describes life “under the sun,” a phrase he uses repeatedly throughout the book. It represents life viewed without eternity in mind without God’s purpose shaping our pursuits.

“Vanity of vanities…all is vanity.”

The word vanity means vapor—something that appears real but disappears the moment you try to grasp it.

That description feels uncomfortably familiar.

##Why So Many Still Feel Empty

We live in a culture driven by materialism, noise, distraction, and constant striving. People are told that happiness is found in more money, more recognition, more experiences, and more success.

Yet even with all of those things available, dissatisfaction seems to grow rather than fade.

Ecclesiastes exposes the emptiness of those pursuits. Solomon examines pleasure, ambition, fame, possessions, and even human wisdom—and finds them lacking when they are separated from God.

None of those things can bear the weight of meaning.

#The Profit Question

“What profit is there?”

If life is only about what we can see, achieve, or accumulate, the return is painfully small.

#When Success Isn’t Enough

“What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

A life can look successful by every earthly measurement and still end in eternal loss.

##What Truly Matters

  • Serving others
  • Sharing truth
  • Growing in God’s Word
  • Living for purposes that outlast us

Meaning is not found in chasing more.

It is found in aligning our lives with God’s design.

The question isn’t whether life has meaning.

The question is where we’re looking for it.

Look beyond the sun to the Son and you’ll find what truly matters.
